How It Works

Test Preparation | Academic Tutoring | Materials
Whether you need three sessions or thirty, we create the best plan for you.

Test Preparation

Each student begins test preparation at different points in his or her academic career. The optimal time frame depends on the learning profile of the student, the initial scores and the final scores desired. Feel free to use our complementary 30-minute consult to help determine the time frame best suited to your needs.

Most students enroll for at least 12-15 sessions before a standardized test. However, the number of sessions varies. We have worked with students who need one to three sessions to help them get over a hurdle, as well as those who choose many more sessions over time to achieve larger improvements.

We typically assign 1-2 hours of homework after each session. After every few sessions, we assign full-length standardized tests, proctored in an official environment. It is essential that students complete all homework and tests, if they wish to achieve the outstanding improvements of which we are so proud.

If you have been referred to a specific tutor by a friend or colleague, please e-mail the tutor directly to set up a time. (Click here to find your tutor's e-mail address.)

If you're not sure about whom you may want as your tutor, please e-mail us at nitin@markseducation.com. We would be happy to set up a time to discuss the best fit.

Weekends are our busiest times and get booked first. Many tutors are fully booked on weekends, and some may be fully booked for the academic year. If you are considering working with a tutor, please contact him or her as early as possible.

Once you have decided upon a tutor, please read our enrollment page and complete our online enrollment form.

The hourly cost of tutoring includes:

1. All test Preparation Materials

2. Standardized tests purchased from the test makers, proctored in a carefully simulated environment.

3. A free 30-minute initial consult to verify fit and to understand a plan of action.

4. A 15-minute parental phone check-in after every four tutoring sessions. We encourage parents to utilize this option as they feel the need.

5. Upon request, we are happy to e-mail parents a progress report after every four tutoring sessions.

6. Access to all of our online reading and vocabulary resources.

Academic Tutoring

Our approach to academic tutoring is highly tailored, depending on the course, the time available, and the needs of the student. In all cases, we emphasize truly understanding content, rather than merely completing assignments. We offer tutoring for tests, mid-term and final exams, and AP exams, as well as ongoing support for the following courses:

  • All high school Math and Science classes
  • All high school English classes
  • Regular and AP US and World History
  • AP Economics
  • AP Computer Science
  • AP Spanish Language
  • Other electives (please ask if a class is not listed here)

We also tutor pre-high school and high school students in study skills to increase their academic efficiency and success.

Materials

We update and upgrade our materials every day.

Not many people realize that standardized tests change in small ways every year. Because our tutors take these tests multiple times a year, they can pinpoint these changes and show them in our materials. For instance, we currently have a 1500-word SAT vocabulary list composed of difficult words that have appeared in published SATs over the past 15 years. This summer, we will upgrade this list to reflect SATs published this past year. Also this summer, we will add more than two hundred problems that reflect subtle new changes to the test, to our online and paper resources. Our materials include:

  • Test Preparation Manuals for the SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject tests which include hundreds of problems split up into exercises organized by difficulty level, that teach the core skills and strategies tested on the Reading, Grammar, Math and Science sections of the SAT and ACT.

  • Our exclusive Weekly Reading Program based upon Opinion pieces and articles from the Washington Post and the New York Times newspapers and The New Yorker magazine.

  • Our Vocabulary list includes a comprehensive 1500-word list, split up into five levels, as well as a shorter 350-word high-frequency word list made up of words that have appeared on multiple published SATs over the past 15-20 years. The entire list is available both in flashcards and in interactive web-based games and quizzes.

  • Actual tests purchased from the College Board, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, SSAT, and other test makers. Unlike other tutoring programs, we use only actual tests for practice, diagnosis, and evaluation.
